Make Mine Music
is a co-operatively run independent record label. Established in 2002 by
Scott Sinfield of Portal and Jon Attwood of Yellow6,
the idea behind the label was it would release music in a very different
way to how labels usually operate, with the artists running the label themselves.
Portal and Yellow6 had both released music on a variety of independent labels
and whilst most had been great to work with, there had been problems with
two labels that had released Portal CDs - both had disappeared owing money
from sales and were less than open about their dealings. Scott had always
assumed that smaller labels would have decent ethics, but unfortunately
he learned the hard way that this isn't always the case.
From the very beginning, it was decided that Make Mine Music should operate as a co-operative with a strong set of principles: everyone would have equal opportunity to state their opinion and discussions would be fair and open; each band would pay for its own releases and get 100 per cent of any money made from those releases – the label would take no cut at all; each band would have total control over how and when recordings were released; the costs (and any subsequent profits) of compilation albums and joint ventures would be divided equally between the bands involved; everyone would pitch in with information and provide mutual support, based on the idea of strength through unity; and bands would not be signed to the label in the traditional way - they would be free to release material on other labels if they wished to do so.
So, here we are in 2008 and it's all gone well so far, being worth the hassle, hard work and worry that often comes with running a small label. We have put out 50 releases by 15 artists and all of our hopes for the label have been exceeded. Moreover, we have remained true to our original ideals and proved that music can be released in a fair and egalitarian way.
